Airflow Patterns in Mechanical Draft Cooling Towers

Mechanical Draft Cooling Towers are huge in structure. The tower structure resembles the shape
and size of natural draft cooling towers. In such kind of tower, the air circulates inside the tower mechanically instead of natural circulation. Generally, propeller fans or centrifugal fans are used in mechanical draft cooling system.

There are 3 kinds of arrangement associated with mechanical draft cooling towers.

  • Counter flows induced draft & Counter flow forces draft

In counter flow design, hot water enters at the top and air is introduced at the bottom and  allowed to exit at the top. Forced and induced draft fans are used in this case.

  • Cross Flow Induced Draft

In this design, the water enters at the top and passes over the fill. The air is introduced at the side either on one side or opposite sides. Here, the induced draft fan draws the air across the wet fill and expels it through the top of the structure.

One main advantage of choosing mechanical draft cooling tower is that user can control the capacity of the tower by just controlling the speed of the fan and the volume of air.
