How to Determine the Performance of Cooling Towers

Understanding a cooling tower requires technical knowledge. You cannot always rely on companies and their representative to come down at your place and check your tower performance. Therefore, it is necessary to know some technical calculations of cooling tower.

Following points can help you to analyze the performance of cooling towers.

  • Check the difference between the water inlet and outlet temperature.
  • Measure the difference between the outlet cold water temperature and ambient wet bulb temperature.
  • Check the ratio of range between cooling water inlet temperature and ambient wet bulb temperature.
  • Measure the cooling capacity in KCal/hr or TR, given as product of mass flow rate of water, specific heat and temperature difference.
  • Measure the rate of evaporation loss and cycle of concentration.
  • Check the blow down losses which depends upon the cycle of concentration and evaporation losses.
