Reason for Decay in Cooling Tower Pipe

Cooling tower, as the name suggest is an equipment for removal of heat. It is often seen that customers complain about the leakage in pipe or damage of pipeline after a few months of using the tower. They feel the supplier of cooling tower has done a fraud business deal. But, the actual scenario is something different. See how?

Pipe corrosion and scale formation is the most common phenomena in the cooling tower life cycle. certain factors triggers of pipe break-down of an industrial cooling system. Take a look at the following-

  • Contaminated/Polluted Water

Cooling towers are generally kept open. The equipment get exposed to the outside environment. As a result, dirty particulates and dissolved gasses contaminate the water. During the process of evaporation, pure water vapor enters the atmosphere, while the contaminated water settle down in the cooling tower. The corrosion process, then take place. High velocity water increase the process by transporting oxygen. Dirty particulates easy moves at the metal pipe and contamination starts at large scale.

  • Poor pH balance of Water

Contaminated water disturbs the pH balance of water making it too alkaline. Calcium  gets deposited in the pipes, creating scales thereby causing damage in the pipe.
