Cooling Tower Construction Starts: Civil Engineering

Facilities Operations will be closing a part of West Campus Drive to through traffic from 4 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 26, in the initial steps to improving the cooling capabilities of the University's central plant. Traffic will be rerouted to Arts Drive.

A concrete base is being poured on which a third water cooling tower will be installed later this year. The additional tower will help improve the effectiveness and cooling capabilities of the central plant to meet the demands of the campus community.

The central plant, completed in 2010, provides power through high-pressure natural gas that powers a 4.6 megawatt turbine to generate electricity. In turn, waste heat created by the turbine is distributed to boilers to heat water and via two 1,310-ton absorption chillers, generate cool water, which is used to heat and cool the campus and provide hot tap water.
